 | | Layo Jimenez is currently working on a guitar for me. It will be made out of Brazilian Rosewood I purchased in Brazil. The sides and back will be Brazilian Rosewood, the top is Sitka Spruce, and the rest I will decide as we move along. This guitar will have a cutaway and will look like a bajo. | | | Layo working on the sides | | | Once I got this wood, Layo had to leave it in a press for over 6 months since it is so dry here in northern Cal that it started to warp. But Layo being the fine craftsman that he is, he was able to stabilize the wood. Brazilian Rosewood is a much sought after wood for guitars. I wanted to be involved with this project as much as I could. Selecting the wood and talking to Layo will indeed make this guitar a very special instrument. | | | | The back is highly figured rosewood with some sap. But it is going to look great once it is high polished. As you can see on the top left hand side where there is tape, Layo will be making the cutaway. | |

WOW WOW WOW look at that Rosewood! That is going to be one beatiful masterpeice, made by the hands of a master. What did that Rosewood cost you? Wood like that would go for $500 or more here in the states, back and sides alone. Very nice!!! Keep us updated! __________________ ---------------------------

 | | The guitar is coming together. I have taken over 50 pictures of the process and this one is where Layo is checking the fit of the back. Incredible skill to make these instruments. I wish I had the patience and skill to make such a work of art. The Brazilian Rosewood is going to look incredible once it gets polished and coated. Will show more later. The inside bracing is showing a little. This is just standard bracing you will find with any other Gibson or Martin guitar. |

| Plate Bracing http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/guitaracoustics/construction.html Unlike many other stringed instruments (such as the violin family) the guitar has a braced sound board and back plate. This is primarily due to the central position of the bridge and saddle and the large surface area of the soundboard and back, combined with their relative thinness and having no soundpost. The guitar requires additional structural support. The modern, conventional, 'fan-bracing' was originally developed by the famous luthier Antonio de Torres Juan (1817-1892). A recent major development in soundboard bracing was made by Australian luthier, Greg Smallman. The structure utilises a 'criss-cross' lattice bracing composed of carbon fibre/epoxy and balsa braces, tapering in height radially outwards from underneath the bridge saddle. Dr Michael Kasha has experimented with various asymmetric bracing geometries. The bracing is acoustically critical: varying bracing techniques will alter the stiffness-to-mass ratios and elastic moduli tremendously, thereby affecting how the guitar radiates sound. | | The bracing part of the guitar or bajo is extremely important. For the most part, guitar makers use basically the same. Bajo sexto makers tend to have thier own system. | |

I spoke to Layo today and he will have a price list available soon. So you will be able buy your woods from Layo including Brazilian Rosewood
Layo has been purchasing wood for himself throughout the years. Seeing that there is such a need for wood, he is willing to make them available to the public. I got my Brazilian Rosewood from Brazil at a very reasonable price. But it was a hassle and you would have to make a trip to Brazil and have it shipped back to the states. Not recommended unless you are going on vacation to Brazil and want to bother with export taxes and shipping costs. |

I have always wanted to be a bajo maker.A friend of mine here in Billings, builds guitars.I had him work on my grandfathers Guadalupe Acosta back in 1985.I had interest way back then, but he said he was not interested in teaching me or in building bajos. He made special order guitars for Waylon Jennings,Marty Stuart,a mandolin, and Roy Clark, just to name a few.He is 80 something now,and still not interested in showing me how to make guitars or a bajo.He is a super nice guy, but will not teach what he knows. His name is Ted Beringer. He is known all over the country. Is there anyone that would teach ?Or do a step by step video,on bajo building? That would be awsome! Well someone please reply! Thanks Layo and Mario, for showing all of us-for sharing what you do. Lord bless! Chris |

Hi Andy,
I changed my mind in the middle of the road and decided to make a bajo quinto instead. It is almost ready. As soon as Layo completes the bajo, I will post some pics.
Gracias!

One beautiful piece of work bro! El Sr. Jimenez obviously is one of the best! Gilbert I congratulate you on such a beautiful instrument. I saw a documentary once on a man who makes guitars out of Kentucky I think. He uses only spruce tops on his guitars. He says spruce wood is one of the most acoustically sound woods you can use on a stringed instrument. they showed when they cut the spruce tree down, and the luthier tapped one end of the log with a hammer and the sound of the tap resonated throughout the length of the entire log which was about 40 ft. long! I found it very interesting, just thought I'd share that with u and the rest of the forum. when I get my bajo made, spruce is definitely what I'm going with!! wish we could see the headstock on that puppy! I was fortunate to see Gilbert's Bajo in person as it is with Don Layo Jimenez at the moment. I visited Layo this Sunday and he had the Bajo tucked away in his living room. He brought it out to show us some of his work and he left us speechless. Very beautiful bajo in person, wished we could have heard it but the strings were loosenend up. __________________ http://www.myspace.com/extranosdelvalle
