| #1 | Well after many attempts of trying to reach Mr. Meza for accordion lessons in Laredo Tx but with no luck, I decided to call another person in a newspaper ad and I want to know if this gentleman is going to teach me what I need to become an accordion player, how could I tell? First he is going to charge me 15.00 dollars an hour the lesson will be given in my home (that is convenient) supposedly it's going to take 1hr a week for four months and after that " I'am going to be able to sacar melodias" whatever that means will find out. So i took my first lesson today but we spend most of the hour talking about the instruments ive played in the past some of the groups and alittle bit of music .......I was teaching him the name of the notes of the accordion because i had my chart there with me so he basically drew a diagram of all the notes for him. i played for him to two polkas and a cumbia and i asked him in what key was i playing the cumbia i dont think he could of answer that but not sure. Also i specify that i only wanted to learn how to "adornar" everytime i asked him something he kinda avoided the question. I was literally telling him " estes tres botones para fuera son La menor estos son Re menor este son Sol menor pare dentro es Sol mayor estos Do mayor estos Fa mayor este es el acorde de tal y tal ...lol...parecia yo el maestro nambe nambe yo haci no juego ....lol......We ll what i need from you guys is to please tell me what to do ...let me tell you one thing this gentleman went home knowing more than what he knew about the diatonic accordion ......I wish that wouldve of been me i Paid....... __________________ NO TODO LO QUE BRILLA ES ORO! | #3 | That's funny Cuando venga para darte la segunda leccion mejor cobrale tu. I think that in this case you sort of got what you paid for. His price was way too low to expect anything more. In my opinion a fair price is between $25 to $60 per hour. If he would have charged you that price, then I would have been upset.
About 25 years ago a private teacher, in my neighborhood, charged $25.00 per half-hour for piano accordion lessons.
Good Luck! y le cobras okay!

| #4 | Bro I just read your second post. I don't know if this guy has a legit system. Most accordion players that I know do not know the actual notes. They know the chord they are in but if you point out a button and ask them what that note is in and out they may not know. This guy may have a legit system for him. This price is very good. I would give it chance and see how it goes. I think you will be able to tell if he is pulling your leg or not right away. I think you should post what your lessons are, like you did today, and we should be able to tell you if he's leading in the right direction. In the worst case you may only be out a couple of $15.00 lessons.
Good luck!

| #6 | I cant help it Maylo but some of these post I read can really make you laugh. The only thing I can suggest but will require alot of patience and time is to learn the scales and chords on El SeƱor Maestro program. Practice the scales starting from the top and work your way down and then back up in reverse. Learn one note at a time until you feel you can master it with little mistakes. For a long time I just played by ear and didnt acomplish anything because I had no other resources until I payed someone $50 for some printed copies of the scales and the chords which really helped me alot. Well thanks to the program you dont have to spend a cent now. Learn just one note that you prefere and be patient and take it from there and see what you think. Learn the singles, thirds and sextas. |

| #7 | is this guy familiar with the music you like, or does he play it? when I started, I had a piano accordion, I didn't know any teachers either, so I went with a man that played several instruments. I'm sure he knew music, just not the music I liked. he wanted me to learn to play the basses with the left hand, and was upset when I told him that I didn't want to do that. show him the adornos you want to learn and ask him if he can play them. |

| #10 | the number system is actually pretty handy it makes transposing songs in to different keys way easier. Ive taken lessons with OTONO LUJAN of Conjunto Los Pochos and he had me do the number thing as well. there are 7 notes in a scale not including its octave being the 8th note, so if you learn the numbers aswell as u already know the names of the notes all u have to do is learn the scale of a certain key and play the exact
number configuration you played in another scale and youve already figured the song out in that key, of course this definately helps in the case of transposing but it will help u in evrything else u want to execute on your squeeze box. OTONO can give u a bit more info on it just send him a message. hope this helps clear something up for ya. As far as that dude teaching u, I think u should keep ur money cuz if that fool cant answer simple things u ask him then that dude is trying to hustle u, but thats just my honest opinion. good luck carnal hope this helps. __________________ Abelito!!

| #12 | Maylo, It seems this teacher plays by ear and does not have a clue about notes. Which is not a bad thing if you have the ear to learn. If you don't, then it's best that you know your notes. Most old school people learn and play like this. If you really want to know if he's legit, have a song ready for him that you would be interested in learning, if he can play it, then it only means he can teach whatever song you want to learn which is half of what you want in a teacher. I myself like to know what I am playing, primera, segunda and tercera, preparacion. I don't know whether he's gonna be able to teach you this. Again, it seems you came across somebody that can play by ear and can teach what he hears. I think $15 is very reasonable for what he's got to offer. I used to pay that about 8 yrs ago, and had a really good teacher. __________________ __________________________________

| #13 | maylo99,
I think learning the scales, in and out, is an excellent idea if your up to that level. To play with the basses you should know the scales in and out. I think it's great when someone can play going in too.
Good Luck!

| #14 | I charge $ 25.00 per half hour but teach all the notes, scales, chords, progressions and techniques.
My first few lessons consist of the major scale in whatever key, thirds and triads. i teach proper fingering in all three rows.
So yeah, you should find a different teacher. __________________ "It's something more than fiction, it creates a drop of toxic issues". |

| #15 | thank you all for your comments and yeah I decided to drop this teacher and will look for a new one I gave him two chances didnt convince me. I'm sure that when I find a good teacher I'm only goin to need a couple of lessons regardless of the charge/price.
Colombiaguy_III are you in Laredo?
